Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

What We're Looking For:

If you have 5+ years of experience in accounting, then you will be excited about the Project Accounting opening with Iridium. In this role, you will be a critical member of the Project Accounting Team and you'll deliver high-quality work that includes the ownership of the Company's projects in accordance with company policies and procedures. In this role you will directly support the Company's Government contracts as well as provide support for internal efforts incluidng Capital, R&D and operating projects. You will thirive if you are a self-starter, detail-oriented, great at developing relationships and passionate about helping others succeed.

What You'll Do:

    Perform Government Contract Accounting support
    • Prepare, analyze and review journal entries including cost accruals, amortizations, allocations and revenue recognition
    • Ensure compliance with labor reporting (timesheets) to company policies
    • Review travel expenses reports and purchase requisitions for allowability to Government programs
    • Review accounting records and financial reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and conformance
    • Prepare, maintain and present various reports, schedules, and analysis in support of Government programs
    • Support Project Management with technical guidance on actual project costs, forecasts and EAC's
    • Provide support for internal and external inquiries, reports, and audits as well as any tax, government related documentation and support
    • Ensure adherence to established internal controls, and GAAP
  • Project stewardship of Government, Commercial and Internal Projects
    • Review and approve new project requests: research and document accounting classifications
    • Setup projects in the accounting systems, ensure proper overhead rates are applied, ensure proper access for employees and contractors, ensure proper margin rates
    • Maintain project access lists, project ownership assignments, active project listings
    • Communicate with the business on project status, track expected completion dates and ensure any construction-in-progress assets are placed in service as appropriate
  • Develop, implement, and improve processes and procedures and initiate corrective actions
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal customers ensuring open lines of communication and follow through on requests or suggested solutions

What You'll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in the accounting industry, specifically with general ledger accounting with strong working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Passionate about using technology to improve business processes. Experience with financial systems (Great Plains Dynamics, OneStream, or similar) is a big plus
  • Ability to read, understand and apply accounting literature to specific business transactions and document conclusions and be the subject matter expert
  • Ability to identify key risk areas, contemplate alternatives, draw conclusions, and recommend and implement changes to improve processes and mitigate risk.
  • Ability to effectively use accounting knowledge to collaborate with varying levels of employees and senior management to drive sound business decisions
  • Strong computer skills including general ledger/accounting systems. Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel, including designing, creating, and maintaining sophisticated spreadsheets with multiple links, use of pivot tables and lookup formulas to achieve desired results
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to confidently present products, deliverables, analyses, and/or issues
  • Possess an analytical mindset, with the ability to understand a situation or problem and think critically to make decisions or come up with solutions
  • Be comfortable managing upward, including being a proactive communicator and asking for help when needed
  • Have confidence and be able to establish valuable relationships with others
  • Must be able to prioritize key tasks and have a strong sense of ownership over your work
  • Be active in seeking out ways to continuously improve yourself and gain new knowledge

Things That Would be Great if You Brought to the Table:

  • Project Accounting experience
  • Experience with Government contracts, particularly with the Department of Defense
  • Knowledgeable in GAAP specific to Research and Development, Capital Software development
  • Familiarity or working knowledge of contract accounting including percentage of complete revenue recognition method, customer invoicing

We'll also need you to:

  • Be on call during crunch times

Work Environment:

This position primarily works in the company office or in a home office. The position is largely sedentary with the majority of the position sitting in a chair and working with a computer. The role uses basic office equipment including a phone, video, computer, keyboard, mouse and printer. For meetings in-person, this position will need to be able stand, walk within the office and climb stairs on occasion.
